Preparing patients for MR-HIFU

A day before treatment, the patient is advised to shave/depilate the hair in the pelvic area. This should be done 1 to 3 days before the intervention. The patient must not use any skin creams after the area has been shaved/depilated. Patients are also asked to fast for 12 hours prior to the treatment.

On the day of treatment, the patient is fitted withan intravenous catheter, which is used to provide medication — a light sedative and the MR contrast agent (after the treatment). A urinary catheter will also be inserted to control the bladder volume. The patient's body temperature will be measured. In the MR room, the patient will be asked to lie on her stomach on the HIFU patient table. A semi-flexible RF coil will be placed around the patient's body. The patient will be given an emergency stop switch and will be advised on how to use it. It is sometimes necessary to fill the bladder and/or the rectum to manipulate the anatomical position of the uterus.

After the treatment, the patient will be taken to a recovery room, where their vital signs will be monitored for a few hours in order to assess the effects of the treatment and the sedation. If no adverse effects occur, the patient will normally be discharged on the same day. The patient will receive a prescription for painkillers and will be advised to take them if needed. The patient will be monitored via follow-up calls or appointments after 6 and 12 months. This aftercare will be provided by a gynecologist or a nurse or the treating radiologist. After 6 and 12 months, the patient must be re-examined by the interventional radiologist who performed the procedure.
